Scripture Readings John 7:53–8:11 – Jesus meets accusation with truth and mercy. Psalm 32:1–5 – The joy of forgiven sin and honest confession. (ESV) Romans 8:1–4 – No condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. (ESV) Big Idea Jesus does not ignore sin, and He does not destroy sinners. He silences accusation, exposes every false righteousness, and sends the forgiven into a new life. Law: We either excuse our sin or weaponize the sin of others, using condemnation to avoid our own need for mercy. Gospel: Jesus absorbs the hostility of the accusers, speaks mercy without compromise, and sets the guilty free to walk in newness of life.

Scripture Readings John 6:1–15, 25–35 – The feeding and the Bread of Life promise. Deuteronomy 8:2–3 – God fed Israel with manna to teach dependence on His Word. (ESV) 1 Corinthians 10:16–17 – One bread, one body in Christ. (ESV) Big Idea Jesus meets real physical need, but He presses deeper: our greatest hunger is for Him, and He alone can satisfy with life that lasts. Law: We chase quick satisfaction and treat Jesus like a means to an end, wanting gifts without surrender. Gospel: Jesus gives Himself as the Bread of Life, not to manage our cravings, but to make us alive forever in communion with Him.

Jesus does not only address our circumstances; He confronts our helplessness and speaks a word that makes us alive and whole. Law: We can become accustomed to bondage, disappointment, and excuses, and we settle for survival instead of healing. Gospel: Jesus steps into long-term helplessness and speaks a freeing command, not because we deserve it, but because He is merciful and strong.

Come and See the Love That Is Lifted Up (John 3:14–17; John 12:32) Ash Wednesday calls us to repentance, mortality, and mercy. John gives us language for all three, especially through light and darkness, truth and grace, and Jesus being “lifted up.”

Big Idea Jesus meets us in our emptiness and shame and offers living water: Himself, freely given, restoring us to God and sending us as witnesses. Law: We look for satisfaction in wells that cannot hold water, and we hide behind shame, avoidance, or self-protection. Gospel: Jesus pursues the lost, names the truth without crushing, and gives living water that becomes a spring of life and joy.
