Jesus does not only address our circumstances; He confronts our helplessness and speaks a word that makes us alive and whole. Law: We can become accustomed to bondage, disappointment, and excuses, and we settle for survival instead of healing. Gospel: Jesus steps into long-term helplessness and speaks a freeing command, not because we deserve it, but because He is merciful and strong.

Come and See the Love That Is Lifted Up (John 3:14–17; John 12:32) Ash Wednesday calls us to repentance, mortality, and mercy. John gives us language for all three, especially through light and darkness, truth and grace, and Jesus being “lifted up.”

Big Idea Jesus meets us in our emptiness and shame and offers living water: Himself, freely given, restoring us to God and sending us as witnesses. Law: We look for satisfaction in wells that cannot hold water, and we hide behind shame, avoidance, or self-protection. Gospel: Jesus pursues the lost, names the truth without crushing, and gives living water that becomes a spring of life and joy.

Jesus does not offer Nicodemus religious improvement, but new birth, a new beginning created by the Spirit through God’s grace. Law: We try to manage our spiritual lives through effort, knowledge, or control, but we cannot give ourselves life. Gospel: Jesus gives what we cannot produce: new birth by water and the Spirit, grounded in God’s love and received by faith.

A man born blind meets Jesus and goes home seeing. Religious leaders with perfect vision remain spiritually blind. In this powerful story, Jesus names Himself the light of the world and calls us out of the shadows. Today we ask where we are still walking in darkness and hear again His promise to lead us in His light.
